Dear OS,

It is my privilege to bring to you all, results achieved by the students of Class XII for which results were announced on 20th May in Himachal Pradesh. I quote message received from School below

“Our class XII Board results went up for the fourth consecutive year by 3.44% from 73.8% of 2008 to 77.27% this year with no compartment or failure and if we calculate English and three best subjects ( which most schools do to show their results) then the overall average goes up to 80.35%. This year Dhruv Singla from Commerce stream stood first by scoring 91 % marks.
Overall one child scored above 90 and two more are little behind him by scoring 89.6 and 89.8%. 11 children got marks in 90’s in Economics with 97 being the highest scored by Harsh Agrawal, 8 in English with 95 as the highest, 2 in Geography with 95 as the highest scored, 6 in Business Studies with 95 being the highest scored by three children, 3 in Accountancy with 95 as the highest .
In Maths also 95 remained the highest scored by three children. Physics and Chemistry had one each with 91 as the highest in both. Highest in Painting and Sculpture remained as 90 and 92, respectively. 9 children scored above 90% in Physical Education with 97 as the highest. Over all 47 children scored above 90 in different subjects as compared to 35 of the last year. This year our all 60 children were placed in first division with 60.8% being the lowest and 39 scored distinction marks. “

"Hello" magazine specialising in celebrity news has in its May09 issue, a write up on A list academic institutions (schools) in India and abroad.
The article " Top Ranks" is about schools that are hallmarks of education,coveted as markers of identity and lineage of families of prominence.

Sanawar features in the A list amongst the boarding schools in India after Doon, Welham Girls and Rishi Valley.

A Hero's Motto

A few Sundays ago, the TV channels carried reports on ragging in Lawrence School, Sanawar. The school is more famous for educating some of India's most gallant soldiers. The school has a war memorial honouring former students who died for the country, including the youngest winner of the Param Vir Chakra. Lt Arun Khetarpal of the 17 Poona Horse was just 21 when he took out five Pakistani tanks on December 16, 1971, in the Battle of Basantar on the last day of the Bangladesh War.

Khetarpal was fighting in the Shakargarh sector on the western front where the objective was to pre-empt any Pakistani advance before the cease-fire. He was wounded and his tank was on fire. However, he continued fighting and his tank was hit again. The next morning, when the cease-fire was in operation, the Pakistani CO dropped by to meet his Indian counterpart, stopped near the smouldering remains of Khetarpal's tank and said, "Who was that? Whoever he was, he fought most bravely. We've never met anyone like him."

"Never Give In" is the Lawrence School motto. The schoolboy Khetarpal would have repeated it each time he did the 5-km Hodson's Run round the school, situated in Himachal at an altitude of 5,600 ft. On December 16, 1971, he may have remembered the school motto when he was wounded but refused to get out of the burning tank despite being ordered to by his superior officer. He may have remembered the school motto when he continued firing on the enemy tanks until the last one left fired and his tank was hit again.

For years after that, his father (who retired as a brigadier) would keep getting letters from a Pakistani officer he did not know. When relations between the two countries returned to normal, Brigadier Khetarpal went to Pakistan to visit Sargodha where the family had lived before Partition. The Pakistani officer who had been writing to him put him up in his house at Lahore. On the night before Brigadier Khetarpal returned to India, the Pakistani officer told him, "Sir, there is something I wanted to tell you for many years. I regret to tell you that your son died at my hands. I had all along thought I would ask for your forgiveness. But, in telling the story, I realise there is nothing to forgive. Instead, I salute your son for what he did at such a young age. And I salute you too because I know how he grew into such a young man. In the end, it is character and values that matter."

Honour is an old-fashioned concept. However, it lives on in the memorial at Sanawar. Nothing can dim the glory of the past or belie the hope of the future. Future generations of schoolchildren doing the Hodson's Run at Sanawar will remember the prizes Arun Khetarpal picked up for sports and studies. Some of them might even follow in his footsteps and join the National Defence Academy at Khadakvasla and march on the Khetarpal Parade Ground. Those who go on to the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun will sit in the Khetarpal Auditorium. The Battle of Basantar was won on the playing fields of Sanawar.

A Memorable Visit to Sanawar

It would be silly of me if I started to describe the beautiful architecture, tradition and heritage and all other nice things that describe your school. I saw it briefly. I admire it immensely. I fell in love with it on the first sight. But all that I can do is envy you - who have lived it.

Sanawarians tell me that once a Sanawarian is always a Sanawarian. It can not be untrue. As a former Prime Minister said “Sanawar is not a school Sanawar is an institution”. I think it’s not only an institution but a home for generations of young boys and girls and there is no place like home. The teachers are the parents and the fellow students are brothers and sisters. It is a one big happy family.

The first time I met Mr Praveen Vasisht was courtesy NDTV studio.
I was in the studio and he was in his beautiful campus at Sanawar. I could see him and talk to him but not shake his hands.
He was trying to defend his action against the students whom he had rusticated from the school. I was trying to give him some moral support and reassurance that he was right in doing so. But I knew that it must not have been an easy decision for Mr. Vasisht to make. His students, including those he rusticated, are like his children. And for those students who, unfortunately, were rusticated, Sanawar, fortunately, still remains their home. I hope, in time, when the wounds are healed, you will invite them & welcome them to join the Old Sanawarians.

Any way, I still had the desire to shake hands with Mr. Vasisht and I believe the feeling was mutual. Mr. Vasisht invited me to be the chief guest for the school’s prize giving ceremony. I quickly accepted it. I did not give him a chance to change his mind and requested if I could bring my wife and two nieces together with me. He was very kind to extend the invitation to them too. It will again be silly of me to describe the hospitability that was extended to us by Mr & Mrs Vasisht and every body else in Sanawar. All I can say is that my wife was very worried on her way back to Delhi wondering if we would be in a position to reciprocate the care and attention to detail if Vasisht’s ever took up our offer of staying with us in our modest home in Gurgaon. My nieces were worried in case I had not made such a great impression & I may not be invited back.

For me it was a great pleasure to attend the function. I felt honoured to be the chief guest and, initially, slightly nervous because I am not used to being a chief guest and that too in a crisply ironed suit. I am more of a bush shirt and a trouser kind. The nervousness wore off within minutes when I felt the warmth of hand shakes of young boys and girls who aspire to be the leaders of our future generation. I quickly felt at ease and warm at heart. The suit did not over power me any more. The slogans, like ‘Never give in’, ‘ And “somebody’s got to stop the rot”, became the basis of my very brief speech to the students, who, I could see, had heard it many times, and where anxious to get out of their uniforms on their last day of the term. They listened to me but wanted me to cut it short. I was the same. I wanted to get out of my suit, sit in the beautiful lawn of the Head Master’s house and enjoy a glass of beer in the excellent weather that was there. The glass of beer never matured but I was equally happy to settle for several cups of ‘Kashmiri Qahwa’ with plenty of cardamoms and almonds. The saffron was missing but I don’t like it any way.

Mr. Vasisht, I found during various conversations over several cups of tea, a very spiritual man with real faith. He has definite ideas and I could not agree more with every thing that he said. We discussed, at some length, the culture of violence which, regrettably, is portrayed incorrectly as an expression of strength when it really is an expression of weakness. Minds that are weak can not be creative and can not contribute. We talked about leadership qualities that must go beyond slogans towards strategies. We tried to distinguish between the concepts of theology and spirituality and had a good, inconclusive, discussion on the difficult, yet necessary, concept that Saint Ved Vyas presented to us, some 2000 years ago in the Bhagvat Gita, about detachment and duty towards universal truth. We also talked, at great length, about the Aman Movement for eradication of ragging that I started 3 months ago after the tragic death of my son at the age of 19 due to ragging. I am grateful to Mr and Mrs Vasisht and all the Sanawarians, for their support for the cause. Please log on to www.amanmovement.org and support the movement. It is a worthy cause.

On the last day of our stay in Sanawar at the dinning table I felt like a little bit of mischief. I thought that there wasn’t much we disagreed upon and there wasn’t any thing that I could tell Mr. Vasisht that he did not know. So I popped the question. Sir, did you know that Mahatma Gandhi was a fashion designer and a successful one. Of course – not, was the firm answer. Here was my opportunity to give Mr. Vashist a lecture on fashion about which he knew nothing and I felt so great leaving Sanawar. I was one up on him.

Prof Kachroo holds a Phd in Engineering Hydrology. He is an academician, a fashion design consultant and social worker. He has taught in several universities around the globe.He has worked with number of International organisations namely WHO, UNESCO and World Bank.
He is presently working full time for Aman Satya Kachroo trust and Aman Movement for eradication of ragging in India.

On 29th March, a group of 45 students of grades 7-12 along with two subject teachers, Mr Manish Ghai and Ms. Shruti Pandit, reached the Dell Computers office located in Mohali for a Computer Trip. The Dell staff extended a warm welcome and were highly cooperative and answered children’s queries with utmost interest and made a presentation about the Dell’s founder and the company’s history along with other information about latest technologies available in the market and their technicalities. There was a question and answer round where the children raised their queries about supercomputers and other various kinds of 3rd generation technologies being developed in today’s world. There was also a tour of the various functional departments of the company and an interactive session where the children were shown the internal parts of the computers.

This trip was made possible with the help of Mr. Deepak Ohylan (OS 85) who went out of the way to arrange it. We extend our gratitude and heartiest thanks to Mr. Deepak Ohylan and the Dell staff for their patience and co-operation and look forward to have more such interactions.

MUMBAI: When it comes to a perception of schools across the country, it's the sandstone institutions that have topped the charts. Mumbai's Cathedral and John Connon School bagged the No. 1 slot in a nationwide perception survey of day schools in the country, conducted by EducationWorld, a Bangalore-based publication, and market research agency C-Fore. Cathedral beat The Sri Ram School, Delhi, which was numero uno last year.

Two other Mumbai schools made it to the top 10 ranks in the survey: Campion School (Rank 4) and Bombay Scottish (Rank 6). Day schools that ranked No. 1 for areas such as academics, like DPS RK Puram (Delhi), did not fare well in the overall rankings.

Rishi Valley School, Chitoor, an alternative centre for learning based on the ideas of the philosopher J Krishnamurti, shared the top slot for boarding schools with The Doon School, Dehradun. And Kodaikanal International School was No. 1 in the international school category.

Over 2,000 parents, principals, teachers and educationists in 16 cities across India were asked to rate 400 well-known schools in India for the survey. The parameters included academic reputation, sports and infrastructure, amongst other things.

"We are certainly the most sought-after schools. Every teacher in the school puts in a tremendous effort to do a great job in the classroom," said Amba Mugwe, a teacher at Cathedral.

The rankings do, however, have their share of critics, like Sudeshna Chatterjee, principal of Jamnabai Narsee School. "The schools surveyed have not been visited during the rankings. It's a perception survey, and so there is no scientific basis for the study. Schools that are doing well should not be demoralised by such a survey," she adds.

AN UNFORGETTABLE 150th CELEBRATIONS AT GHORA GALI

There are some experiences in our lives which are very tough to pen down. Our experience to Pakistan was one such experience. A delegation which was headed by the Headmaster Mr Praveen Vashisht and his wife,along with three teachers and seventeen students represented our school in Lawrence College GhoraGali's 150th celebrations. The institution is located at an altitude of 6000 feet in Murree hills, (Punjab) Pakistan. It shares the same motto as ours “Never give in” and has four houses namely Iqbal,Tipu,Jinnah and Babar. The architecture ,traditions,culture and weather all resembled that of Sanawar’s. It's is an all boy’s school and consists of junior school,preparatory school and senior school.

On the 7th of October we crossed the Wagha border into Pakistan where we were received by the Old Gallians. After a long eight hour journey we finally reached our destination Lawrence College where we were welcomed very warmly by the staff and students. After dinner we attended a musical extravaganza in which many eminent Pakistani singers performed. The following day we attended their Founder’s day assembly in their ever so beautiful chapel. Later we were invited to Chinar Heights-a magnificent golf club for brunch by the Old Gallians Society. After posing for about a hundred pictures our jaws finally gave up and went back to the college to explore the campus.

In the evening we were invited to the Principal’s residence “White House” for dinner. At night,we attended their school concert where Amala from Sna sang a melodious song and the others performed bhangra.Our Headmaster too brightened the evening by dedicating a song to his wife , the chief guest was begum Aamna Taseer who is also the wife of the Governor of Lahore. We held witness to an excellent play ,dances and songs performed by the students.

The Gallians were very hospitable and took care of the smallest of our needs - their hospitality remains unmatched.

The most exciting day of our visit to Pakistan was when we attended their main function . The chief guest for the function was the Prime minister His Excellency Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani . We participated in the march past which was somewhat like our Ncc. The PT put up by the junior school was in synchronization , gym and the karate display by the Gallians proved that they are fearless. Their prize distribution ceremony got over with the declaration of a week’s holiday . Later that evening we were invited for tea with the Prime minster at the Principal’s residence . We visited the Murree mall and got to shop a little bit.

The next day we headed to Islamabad visiting Panja sahib which was an enchanting experience after which we spent our evening in the Islamabad market. Everyone was exhausted and tired on our way back to the college.Our journey to the sikh shrines didn’t end here as the following day we paid a visit to Guru Nanak’s birthplace Nankana Sahib , a visit with fond memories attached to it. We had dinner at a club arranged by an old Gallian which was delicious. Our stay that night was at Mr Tanvir ‘s house who is a senior officer in the Punjab police(Pakistan) . he and his family welcomed us with great affection . Our last day in Pakistan was an enjoyable as well as a sad one. We knew we were going to Pakistan and even the shopping at the Liberty market and the meal the Governor’s house couldn’t help lighten our spirits.

A Journey to Pakistan

(An open letter to Prime Minister, India)

Dear Prime Minister Shri Manmohan Singhji,

I trust this letter finds you in good health and spirits. I’ve been wanting to write to you for sometime on my recent visit to Pakistan with a group of 17 children, (both boys and girls) and 5 of us teachers from The Lawrence School, Sanawar.

Our sister school Lawrence College Ghoragali in Pakistan invited us to their 150^th Founder’s day celebrations for which their Prime Minister Yousuf Gilani was the Chief Guest. Incidentally, my school is 163 years old, and both our schools, alongwith Lawrence School Lovedale in the Nilagiri hills have been founded by Sir Henry Lawrence, who later was appointed as Governor General of undivided Punjab. All three schools share our Founder’s personal motto which is “Never Give In”.

We all were there in Pakistan for about a week, and it is a visit which none of us will ever forget . One has grown up hearing and knowing about the warmth, love and the big heartedness of the people of Pakistan, but what we experienced was well beyond our expectations. Wherever we travelled in Pakistan, their schools, markets, the Sikh holy shrines of Nankana Sahib and Panja Sahib and Taxila, etc, we were received with a lot of warmth and joy. Shopkeepers refused to take money from us, and Governors and IG’s of Police insisted on hosting us up for night halts and special meals.

Incidentally, when I was introduced to their Prime Minister at Lawrence College, Ghora Gali, he immediately remarked that you are a good friend of his, and that he has the highest of regards for you. On our part, we presented him with a Silver Salver as a memento and a cheque of $2,500 contributed voluntarily by our school children from their pocket money for the children of flood victims of Pakistan which he most graciously accepted, and proudly announced to the huge gathering assembled there, to a very loud applause.

Some people did ask us there as to what motivated us to come to Pakistan and we said, “it’s the love of your people, and that we have come to build and strengthen our ties through love, hope and faith for a better future.” After all, we share a common history, culture and heritage, and that just a line drawn on a map could not divide hearts. Incidentally, Amritsar and Lahore are roughly 25 kms away from the Wagah border but tragically in different countries. I personally interacted a lot with the youth there, and all of them wanted to forget our differences and some bitterness of the past and rather celebrate our common culture and heritage and move on by turning a new page of love and understanding in our history. “The youth here is all for it, Sir” is what many told me. Some of my children were actually sad to leave Pakistan at the end of our visit, and wanted to stay back, while I knew in my heart, that I will surely visit Pakistan again. Such is the power of Love.

A lot of critics talk about the unfinished agenda of partition being J&K, whereas I feel that the unfinished agenda of Partition is to once again unite the two countries. Some of our sages, most notably Sri Aurbindo Ghosh have even predicted this. The day religion is removed from our Politics this will become a reality, just like the day caste is no longer an issue in electoral politics, our democracy will get to the next level. Its just a matter of time now when both will happen.

Dear Fellow Old Sanawarians,

Hi. First of all along with my wife I’d like to wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2011. I’ve been wanting to write to you for quite some time but dragged my feet as I was not too sure how you would receive it. I know some of you didn’t want me to be a part of the S’na OS Net (not the overwhelming majority) but still, as always, I eventually listened to my ‘inner voice’ and here I am writing to you all, not as Headmaster but as Peeks, a fellow Old Sanawarian (Siwalik ’76).

For S’na to get to the next level, to where it belongs, ‘right at the top’, I need your help. Ours being a 163 years old school, our infrastructure needs a lot of repair. When it rains, most of our houses and buildings leak and some of our retaining walls and fields are crumbling or sliding. Inspite of this, we still have modernized as a school (without diluting our traditions and core values) by having most of our classrooms wired up to the latest technology with assistance from ‘Educom’ and the few classrooms remaining would be covered very soon. Our IT department is constantly being upgraded to the latest modern standards and our Library is totally digital. In our Audio Visual room we have special extra classes for our senior science students in the afternoon to whom lectures are beamed via satellite from learned professors at Delhi. All this happens, and more, inspite of our children regularly visiting the neighbouring Leprosarium, cancer patients at Shimla, School for blind at Chandigarh and old age homes around. Our traditional SUPW activities are going on full swing, apart from the regular morning PT, games, hobbies, NCC, House Shows, Camps and Founder’s.

It is never easy for any Headmaster of S’na to raise the fee beyond the normal inflation level each year first because govt. (Chairperson is Secretary, Govt. of India) won’t allow it easily, and secondly even if they agree, we could loose out to the majority in the middle class. I’m sure you all will agree, that we shouldn’t become just an elitist school like some of the good ones in India have become which are then out of the reach of the multitude in our country. Let’s not forget that our Founder Sir Henry Lawrence founded this great historical school for the orphans and wards of ordinary soldiers to begin with. This social aspect can never, or should not be forgotten. In our humble ways and each according to ones capacity, we have to give back to society which gives us so much. That’s why, this year we have already tested and admitted three children for class 5 (two boys and one girl) who either lost their parents in the recent Leh floods, or whose parents suffered due to violence in J&K. We may admit two more children from the economically weaker sections of society totally free of cost to them. I’m very happy to say that one OS, Mr. Harminder Singh Sangha, batch of 1983(H) has volunteered to educate the small girl and has already paid her annual fees for the first year. Two other OS, Amanbir Sethi, batch of 2003(S) and Karamjot Singh Bedi, batch of 2000(N) jointly have offered to sponsor the education of another child. The acts of these three has inspired me no end and I don’t have sufficient words to thank them. The journey of a 1000 miles, always starts with such single and simple steps.

I’m looking for some more big hearted Old Sanawarians for a few more such sponsorships, and also some assistance, financial and otherwise for the further development and growth of our school. Towards this end, I am attaching our ‘wish list’ as far as our infrastructural requirements are concerned, top of which being a new state of the art ‘Science Block’ and a permanent solution to our water problem. I may add here that some OS have already generously assisted the school in the last few years, the most notable being Mrs. Jyotsna Suri 1969 (HGD) who refurbished the entire GD last year and Parker Hall, Mr. Bhupinder Singh Ahluwalia batch of 1965(N) who constructed three new classrooms above the school bank and refurbished another one adjacent to the bank apart from tiling CDH and GD Holding House, and Mrs. Priyanka Malhotra (Munji) 1984 (HGD), who instituted a cash award for a teacher each year apart from giving us Rs. 12 Lakhs. When I asked all of them as to how I should thank them, they just said that this is the least they could do for S’na which gave them so much. We are in touch with Mrs. Kiran Nader batch of 1966 (H), who has agreed to build a state of the art language lab, apart from donating 80 computers to the school. Collectively of course each year the batches which celebrate their silver and golden jubilees of passing out of S’na help us immensely by doing whatever they can, be it a new basketball court for the school (next to Trafford Court), teacher award for best Board result, a school bus, construction of Khetrapal stadium or scholarships for the higher education of children of our support staff. Most recently, the batch of ‘85 has donated Rs. 25 Lakhs for the renovation/construction of Barne Field which will be in the name of our legendary Mr. B. Singh. I certainly must have missed out many more such magnanimous contributions, and I apologise to the people concerned in advance.

There is still much more that needs to be done at school (as the wish list will show) and as mentioned earlier, I would not like to raise the fee hugely either. Ideally we are looking to have a substantial corpus from donations out of which we can educate some more children from the weaker sections of society. I can from our side assure you all of total transparency of how your funds are utilized with details given to you and inviting you to come to S’na and check for yourselves our accounts etc.

Lastly, I want you all to know that whatever some critics may say to the contrary for reasons best known to them, the health of our school is very good. I say this not just because we are ranked in the top four boarding schools of the country (its anyway not even a podium finish) or that our school results have constantly improved in the last five years (Out of the last 10 Board results in 5 years, we have improved it 8 times). Our passing out XII batch average is around 80% now as opposed to 68% in 2005. I say our school is doing fine simply by the fact that many more children want to join our school now (100 more than last year) and very few are wanting to leave mid way like before. There’s a lot more pressure upon us from all sides to take kids in our school which has only added to my higher blood pressure. Also, against the vacancies in staff arising out of retirements, I’m getting wonderful new and younger teachers now which are all positive pointers as to where our school is heading. Discipline is good, though there is always scope for its further improvement and we all are working at it relentlessly. It is increasingly getting challenging to keep discipline good here in a scenario where there is a good amount of moral and ethical decay in society, all the more without the use of ‘danda’ which is forbidden by law, but I am very confident of improving it furthermore.

All this would not be happening if the morale of our staff and kids was not good. For this turn around, I remain deeply indebted to my Board members and LS(S)S, but more importantly, to you all Old Sanawarians for your continued support. You all are always free to write to me directly where you think I could improve, as I always welcome healthy and positive criticism for the betterment of our school. We will sometimes differ on ideas, which is natural, but let us together be committed to our common goal of taking S’na to greater glory and where it belongs ‘At the top’.
