OS Win Anil Bhavanani Memorial Golf Tournment
By Nikhil Nadkar (OS94)
The Doon School organises a golf tournament in Mumbai every year in memory of one of its Alumni, Anil Bhavnani. Players comprise old boys from Sanawar, Doon and Mayo. This year's list was expanded to include St Paul's and Scindia. Played in a collegial atmosphere with the best intentions ... however, when rival schools meet one cannot keep the competitive juices from flowing.
On a rather pleasant Friday afternoon 18 amateur golfers and friends from the aforementioned schools gathered together at the picturesque US Club, by the Arabian Sea, for what promised to be a fun yet competitive day of golf.
Sanawar had the largest contingent with 8 players that include a lady golfer, Payal Matta Wadhwa (OS V 1983), Sangramsinh Gaikwad (OS S 1959), Varun Batra (OS S 1984), Vivek Sud (Captain OS S 1983), Rohit Kapur (OS S 1983), Rajesh Saluja (OS V 1985), Gautama Dutta (OS H 1983) and Nikhil Nadkar (OS H 1994).
The first tee-off was at 1330 hrs. As the round progressed no one had a clue about who was leading etc. as everyone was either adjusting to the new course and conditions or just enjoying the general camaraderie. There were refreshments on the course as well as during the break after the first 9 holes. Everyone finished their rounds between 1800-1830 hours and then had the opportunity to shower before assembling for a few pre-dinner beers followed by dinner.
The dinner was a lavish affair and a lot more old girls and boys as well as partners and spouses joined in. While the party was in full swing the scorecards were with PwC for tabulating the Stableford scores which take into account the different skill levels / handicaps of the players to make it an even playing field.
Doon – Third Place
Mayo – Second Place
Sanawar – First Place Best golfer / top score: Vivek Sud (Sanawar)
Other notable scores: Sangramsinh Gaikwad, Varun Batra, Rohit Kapur and Payal Matta Wadhwa
Sudhir Sood of Mayo announced the results and thanked the Bhavnani family for their continued support of the event and congratulated all participants.
The food and drink was enjoyed by all and wound up around midnight (at least that was when yours truly left the venue) and now I know never to be the junior, most at an event in the future.
